The History of the Pickering Casino
The concept of a casino resort has been around for several decades, but it wasn’t until 2005 that the Province of Ontario issued two licenses to host large casinos: one in London and another in Windsor. The government chose these locations based on their potential revenue generation from cross-border gaming with Michigan and Ohio. However, after years of negotiations with local authorities, neither casino was built.
The story changed when a private company, Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited, partnered with the Ontario Lottery Corporation (OLG) to develop Pickering Casino two large casinos: one in Pickering and another in Ajax. After months of public consultation, regulatory approvals, and necessary permits, the Pickering Casino Resort broke ground in 2020. Expected to be operational by mid-2024, this massive $700 million facility aims to establish itself as an upscale gaming destination.
The Location
The casino will occupy approximately 70 acres on a prime location along Highway 401 and Brock Road in Pickering’s East Bayfront area. This site was chosen due to its accessibility from both major highways and public transportation routes, making it easily accessible by car, bus, or other means.
The Design
The proposed design of the casino resort has been designed with a focus on an urban aesthetic. It will feature modern architecture blending sleek glass façades with sustainable green spaces within its exterior, while inside, gamblers and non-gamblers alike can enjoy state-of-the-art gaming amenities.
Facilities and Amenities
Once completed, the Pickering Casino Resort is expected to offer an assortment of facilities that cater both to casual visitors and high-rollers. Some of these include:
- Games: With over 2500 slots, 200 electronic tables games, live table games such as Blackjack, Baccarat, Roulette, and Craps, as well as poker rooms offering various tournaments.
- Dining & Entertainment Options:
- A wide variety of dining establishments offering fine dining experiences to casual eateries with different cuisine types.
- An expansive entertainment complex featuring top-tier live performers in theaters for concerts or stand-up comedy shows.
- Accommodations: Luxury hotel rooms, ranging from budget-friendly comfort options up to high-end executive suites with personalized services.
- Wellness and Recreation:
- State-of-the-art fitness center offering private training sessions alongside standard gym equipment access.
- A lavish spa providing diverse massages, facials, and other body treatments for total relaxation.
The casino plans include several non-gaming areas such as family-friendly restaurants, kids’ play zones with arcade games, virtual reality experiences, or live sports broadcasts. Guests can also unwind in a dedicated lounge area while enjoying wine tastings from various Ontario wineries on site.
Financial and Regulatory Aspects
A vital aspect of the Pickering Casino Resort’s development involves its financial structure. The private investment is primarily backed by Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited, with some funds coming from external partnerships for specific infrastructure projects. Regulatory oversight comes under OLG authority due to gaming regulations; they ensure that all operational aspects meet provincial standards and rules regarding responsible gambling practices.
Job Opportunities
With thousands of direct jobs created during construction phase alone – which included plumbers, electricians, carpenters, engineers – numerous permanent positions in various industries such as hospitality management, human resources, IT support services among others are expected to be generated at completion. Additionally, these employment opportunities will attract professionals seeking growth within Canadian industries where work-life balance is valued.
